Supervisory Skills is a two-day introductory class. Areas of discussion include: Target Audience: The program seeks to equip front line supervisors with the skills to do an effective job in guiding, directing and evaluating their staff. The program is open to new supervisors, to be supervisors and experienced supervisors of the Mobile County Merit System.

8:30 am until 12 pm Fundamentals of Supervision - Role as a Supervisor and Responsibilities Supervisor’s Toolbox - MCPB Rules, Regulations, Procedures Department Rules, Regulations, Procedures Employment Laws Technical Skills, People & Management Skills Effective Communication Skills Critical Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Employment Laws (a brief overview-legal responsibilities) Communications Skills 1:15 pm until 4 pm Selection Process – System Procedures - MCPB Rules & Procedures Job Announcements / Application Reviews Requesting Certifications /Processing Registers / Reinstatement Interviewing Skills & Selection Process

8:30 am until 11 am Employee Performance & Evaluations – What a Performance Appraisal Is / Types of Evaluations Setting Performance Goals / Measuring Performance Merit System Forms and Procedures Types & Forms: Working Test Period & Service Ratings 11 am until 12 pm Employment Concerns– Progressive Discipline General Steps to Follow MCPB Discipline Procedures 1:15 pm until 3 pm Employment Concerns – Handling Employee Complaints and Concerns 3 pm until 4:30 pm Building and Leading the Team – Building the Team Characteristics of Leaders Leadership Styles/Skills |
